'I can rip out the roar
from the throat of a tiger,
or gargle with fire
or sleep one whole night in the Minotaur's lair,
or flay the bellowing fur
from a bear,
all for a dare.
There's nothing I fear'.

extract from Carol Ann Duffy, 'Delilah'

I was in the Lorimer subway station today in Brooklyn and there was a beautiful boy playing slide guitar and when he started singing i got goosebumps all along my arms even in the heat of the subway stayed with me the whole way up to 42nd street... it sounded like late night bars on the outskirts of town with ropey strippers dancing on tables, dollar bills tucked into their knickers, it was riding horses accross sun parched prairie lands with a dry mouth and big heart and the sun going down behind the mountains like a phoenix rising up from the ashes, it was a neon cross outside the church ground with a sign saying Jesus loves you and a bunch of choir boys in white gowns singing acapella at sunday service in Texas. It was so good it made me sad and happy at the same time, i think maybe that's what you call bittersweet.
